I’ve driven Ford almost my whole life (or you know since I got my license). My first car was a used Volvo (I suspect this is true for many, many swedes) but when I had the money to buy my first car I bought a Ford Fiesta.
It was just me and my ex-wife back then, we weren’t planning on having kids and needed a smart car for an urban environment. It fit the bill.
But time moves on, you break up, and - you get a new car. This time around I got the Fiesta ST. Same compact format but with a death-defying 150 horsepower. It honestly felt like a go-cart to drive. I loved that car.
Then I met my current wife. After a while we were expecting and so we needed a bigger car so I got the only sane choice - The Ford Focus ST (hatchback), this was back when Ford owned Volvo so they stuck a 225 horsepower T5 engine in a Focus and called it a day. This was also a great car.
The next car was also a Focus ST but this time around more family styled still, a full station wagon. And by now Ford had sold Volvo and stuck a 250 horse power turbo powered engine in the Focus. That was 12 years ago and it’s still my car to this day.
I would be lying if I said I didn’t like it. It handles great, it’s plenty fast and it gets me from A to B like a car should.
I have been looking for a new car for quite some time now but like the situation with Apple I don’t want something american anymore. It’s tainted. Fords current models also made it much easier for me to look elsewhere, even the Mustang has been turned into a bulky, fugly SUV. The Mondeo, Focus and Fiesta are all gone, replaced with big misshapen SUVs.
Still. What to get? Every car I have ever owned have run on petrol and now that’s coming to an end, it’s time to go hybrid or full EV I guess. I’ve looked at VW, Citroen, Peugeot, Renault, Seat and a couple of others and am more bewildered than ever. This will require a lot more research before I pull the trigger…
